To accomplish its goals, FNS is organized around initiatives. Prior to 2004, there were 5 initiatives. In late 2004, a sixth initiative - Biodiesel - was added.
- Greening Federal Copier Paper Initiative
- Barbara J. Lither, lither.barbara@epa.gov
- Goal: To move FNS member agencies beyond the current copier paper requirement of 30% postconsumer content, encourage less paper use, and ensure proper recycling.
- Electronics Products Stewardship Initiative
- http://www.federalelectronicschallenge.net
- Viccy Salazar, salazar.viccy@epa.gov
- Goal: FNS supports the Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC) jointly developed by EPA and the White House Task Force on Recycling. FNS member agencies are active participants in the FEC and encourage others to join. In 2003, 4 FNS members are active participants, and more are expected.
- Sustainable Buildings Initiative
- Cheri Sayer, cheri.sayer@gsa.gov
- Goal: To make a substantial contribution to sustainable building practices within our agencies.
- Green Power Procurement Initiative
- Chandra Shah, chandra_shah@nrel.gov
- Goal: The Green Power Initiative supports FNS members in accomplishing the Federal goal of meeting 2.5% of energy needs from renewable energy resources by the end of Fiscal Year 2005. We utilize a three-pronged approach to meet the goal: on-site development of renewable energy projects, procurement of green power, and purchases of “green tags” or “renewable energy credits.”
- Environmental Management System Initiative
- Larry Woods, woods.larry@epa.gov
- Michele Wright, wright.michele@epa.gov
- Goal: FNS provides assistance to federal agencies as they go about developing EMS plans. FNS will do this primarily through EMS training to help meet the requirements of Executive Order 13148.
- BioDiesel Initiative
- Barbara J. Lither, lither.barbara@epa.gov
- Goal: To make a substantial contribution to use and availability of biodiesel within our agencies.
